Lost Key
LOCK-OUT
Cadets need to carry their keys and University ID Cards at all times. If the occasion arises that a cadet is locked out of his/her room, he/she should contact Corps Housing (during normal business hours), a Unit Commander and/or Housing Officer in the dorm, or the Commandant's Duty Officer via the Guard Room.
The use of force to open a door as a result of a lock-out or lock malfunction is strictly prohibited. A cadet who knowingly and intentionally forces a door open to gain entry will be disciplined and assessed for the damage.
LOST KEYS
Though care should be taken to prevent it, a lost key is a normal occurrence in cadet life. To ensure resident safety and maintain key control, Corps Housing initiates a lock change in the event of a lost room key, at the expense of the cadet who loses the key ($45.00). If you do lose your key, Corps Housing will issue you a replacement key pending lock change or recovery of the original lost key. When you come to Corps Housing to complete the paperwork to request a replacement key, you will be asked to select one of the following options:
Option 1 (Anticipate Finding the Lost Key): A seven day grace period may be requested before the lock change is processed. In this case, the replacement key becomes a loaner key pending recovery of the original key. If the key is not returned within the seven days, the lock change is automatically processed and the cadet is billed for the lock change. It is the cadet's responsibility to personally return the loan key (before the seven days are up) to Corps Housing to avoid being billed.
Option 2 (Do Not Anticipate Finding the Lost Key): For safety and the security of an occupant's belongings, Corps Housing strongly urges cadets to waive the grace period and accept the billing so the lock can be changed immediately.
Option 3 (Checking Out of Room): When vacating a room (due to hall closing, room change, university withdrawal, or any other reason), there is no grace period and the lock change will be processed immediately if the room key is not returned to Corps Housing or your Unit Commander and/or Housing Officer at the time of check-out.
Due to the labor, material, and administrative costs involved, once the lock change and billing process has been initiated a bill cancellation or refund will not be made, even if the original key is found. As of this printing, the lock change fee is $45.00.
BROKEN OR DAMAGED KEYS
If a key is broken or damaged, Corps Housing will replace it at no charge to the cadet. Remnants of a broken key will need to be delivered to Corps Housing for issue of a replacement key.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITY
Cadets are accountable for their key upon issue. When checking out at the end of the year (or when vacating a particular room because of a room change or any other reason), the cadet will return their key to his/her Unit Commander and/or Housing Officer, unless given specific directions otherwise from Corps Housing. “Hot-swapping” of keys (handing keys over directly to another cadet moving into the room) is prohibited. “Hot-swapped” keys will be handled as lost keys at check-out. Cadets may be disciplined for being in possession of a key that was not officially issued to them.
